In today’s competitive academic environment, scoring high in exams like NEET-UG has become increasingly challenging. Physics, in particular, is one subject where many aspirants struggle. As a 3rd-year MBBS student and a core team member of Livagain, I have experienced this firsthand.
In my journey, I moved from scoring 56 marks in my first attempt to an impressive 170 out of 180 in my second with the total score of 645/720 (All India Rank 5503 and SML 308). This blog is my effort to share insights and tips to help you master physics, one of the most daunting subjects for NEET aspirants.
Why Do Students Struggle with Physics?
From my own experience, students often find physics difficult because of the following reasons:
1. Lack of Practice in Solving Questions:
Without regular problem-solving, understanding applications becomes tough.
2. Minimal Test Practice:
Students hesitate to attempt tests, either due to incomplete revision or fear of failure.
3. Over-Reliance on Memorizing Formulas:
Instead of understanding concepts, many students focus solely on rote learning formulas.
4. Insufficient Analysis of Mistakes:
Reviewing incorrect answers is crucial to improving, yet it’s often overlooked.
5. Weak Time Management:
Physics problems can be time-intensive, requiring practice under timed conditions.
My Journey from 56 to 170 Marks!!
In my first NEET attempt, I avoided tests, thinking, “Why attend when I haven’t completed my revision?” This mindset held me back. After the initial failure, I shifted my approach. I focused on:
- Solving Maximum Questions: Practicing a wide variety of problems improved my problem-solving skills.
- Analyzing Mistakes: Every test I attempted became a learning opportunity to identify and fix my weak areas.
- Clearing Concepts: Instead of memorizing, I took time to understand the “why” behind formulas and theories.
This change in strategy not only boosted my confidence but also my score.
The Importance of 11th-Grade Basics
One of the major reasons physics feels overwhelming is the lack of a strong foundation in 11th-grade concepts. Chapters like:
- Basic Mathematics
- Units and Dimensions
- Scalars and Vectors
- Motion in One and Two Dimensions
- Work, Energy, and Power
- Gravitation
…form the backbone for many high-weightage 12th-grade topics. Without a solid grasp of these fundamentals, 12th-grade physics can feel impossible to master.
For students currently in 12th grade, my advice is to revisit these basics from 11th grade. Strengthening your foundation will not only make 12th-grade topics easier but will also improve your overall preparation and marks.
Tips to Tackle Physics Effectively
1. Practice Regularly
Dedicate time every day to solving physics problems.
2. Attempt Mock Tests:
Even if you’re not fully prepared, mock tests help you identify weaknesses and improve time management.
3. Analyze Mistakes:
Review every incorrect answer to understand where you went wrong.
4. Understand Concepts:
Focus on the “why” and “how” behind formulas rather than rote learning.
5. Time-Bound Practice:
Simulate exam conditions to improve speed and accuracy.
Final Thoughts
Physics is challenging, but it’s also one of the most rewarding subjects when approached strategically. The effort you put into building strong concepts, consistent practice, and smart test-taking will reflect in your scores. Remember, every NEET topper was once in your shoes, struggling with the same chapters and concepts. With determination and the right strategy, you too can conquer physics and excel in your exams.
Good luck with your preparation!
